TRAMS AND TRAINS.

CONNEXIONS AT RAILWAY STATIONS. Reporting to the Christchurch Tramway Board yesterday the Works and Traffic Committee stated that it had carefully considered the representations of the Lyttelton Borough Council that trains were frequently not met by tramcars, and that sometimes cars with trailers stopped at the comer of Manchester street and Moorhouse avenue instead of backing down for waiting passengers at the railway booking office. With respect to the latter complaint, the instructions were that all cars must commence their journey from the booking office, and if this was not done it was because of disregard of regulations by motormen and conductors. With respect to cars not meeting trains, the Committee noted that without seriously interfering with the Papanui .service it was impossible to improve the present arrangements. Motormen ijvere required to wait if a train was late, for two minutes, but not more. Even if a special car was put on to a Cathedral square-Railway service, it would be impossible for it to meet all "in" and "out" trains. In compliance with a similar request some yearu ago, a car was set aside specially for a service between the Christchurch railway station and Cathedral square. Its receipts averaged 41d per car mile, whereas the operating costs were yd, with capital standing charges additional. It was because of this heavy loss that it was withdrawn, ior some time past the want of additional track facilities had been realised, but the work was postponed in view of the proposed extensive alterations in the railway layout, which would, in turn, necessitate extensive tram alterations. It had now been ascertained that owing to the war, the railway improvements had been postponed and the Committee, therefore, proposed to put in a loop between the station and Madras street. The report was adopted
