BOROUGH COUNCILS.

WOOLSTON.

The fortnightly meeting 1 of the "Woolaton Borough Council was hold last evening. Proeent —The MavoT (Mr J. J. Graham), Messrs W. B. Richardson, J. Hodson, L. Hart, V. Fuller, F. Newton, D. llcltae, C. Hill, and J. iiillay.

The Woolston Bed Cross Society wrote asking for the loan of polling booth stalls for their forthcoming carnival. This was granted, mid the electrical engineer, Mr J. Crorn"bie Scott, was deputed to attend to a, request for lighting. The Canterbury Education Board wrote asking permission to put a turnstile in the school fence. Tlie matter was referred to the "Reserves Committee.

The Finance Committee reported that receipts for the fortnight had heen £121 118 Id, and expenditure £151 15s sd. Th© genera] account showed a debit balance of £1200.

The Electricity Committee report recommended that the Council undertake the installation of electric light into the private houses in tho borough, that a, competent workman be engaged, and that 26 poles be purchased. These recommendations were adopted except that the engineer was instructed to get 35 poles instead of 26 poles. The Christchurch Gas Company wrote in regard to the increased proportionate cost of lighting a limited number of lamps and suggesting that tho Woolston Borough Council had overlooked the suggestion contained ill the Gas Company's letter of September 6th, offering to discuss tli© terms of a contract for a term. The "WOolston Brass Band wrote a skin? for a refund of rates, stating that all their engagements had "been for Red Cross work* or Patriotic Funds. The question of rebate (on rates was referred to the Finance Committee. The band was also asked to nominate suitable dates for concerts, as the Council had already voted £15 to municipal; concert®.
