STUBBORN FIGHTING,
CONTEST FOR HALICZ

A communique states: — "In stubborn fighting on the right bank of the Zlota Lipa southward of Brzezany, we dislodged the enemy. Fighting continues in the regions of the River Naraiuvka and the Podvyseke-Halicz railway. "The enemy has already suffered great losses in killed $nd wounded, and 3174 Germans have been taken prisoner. "Snow is falling in the Carpathians."

The German communique states: — "There is increased Russian activity on the whole of Prince Leopold's front northward of Pinsk.
"Enemy attacks westward of Lutsk, on a twenty kilometres front from Za-
turcky to Pastomyty, advancing fa numerous waves, completely failed, after suffering the severest losses, which in some places wero fearful. "Most vigorous attacks against General von Bohm Ermolli's Army, between this Soreth and tho Strypa, northward of Zborow. and also attacks against General von Ebon, broke down."' THE AUSTRIAN VERSION. (Australian ani X.Z. Cable Association.) (Received September 19th, 1.5 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, September 18. Ah AustTian communique says:— "The Russians mado extraordinary but unsuccessful efforts to shako our allied line. Superior forces attacked south-west of Dorna Watra, between Kapul Mountain and at Yzernahcra, south-west of Brzezany, but wero ovorywhere repulsed.
"Numerous waves of troops, including tho reinforced Guards, attempted a master stroke at Lutsk, but tho attacks mostly broke down. Where they wero successful, our counter-at-tack threw them out."
IN ARMENIA^. TURKISH ATTACKS CHECKED. PETROGRAD, September 17. A communique states: — "The Turks On Saturday night attacked our advance guards on the Karaburna front in tho direction of Essolli. They wero repelled with great losses. "Turkish attacks southward of Kiglii and west of Rayat were also unsuccessful." Kighi is botwoen Erzingan and Erzcroum, but considerably to the south of tho line drawn between those two plnccs. PERSIAN OPERATIONS. A NEW ARMY. PETROGRAD, September 17. The Russian abandonment of Kormanshah was duo to tho intense heat, which, has now ceased, and tho Russians aro in the field with practically a new army. Recent successes will probably continue without interruption. PRESENT FROM BOKHARA. (Reuter'a Telegram*.) (Received September 18th, 6.15 p.m.) PETROGRAD, September 17. Tho Emir of Bokhara has presented tho Czar with 1,000,000 roubles for war purposes.
Bokhara is a Khanati of Ceutral Asia subject to Russia. Its area is 96,650 6quaro miles, and the population i s estimated at 2,500,000. Its capital, Bokhara, is reckoned tho chief city in Central Asia for trade.
