FALL FROM A TRAM.

The tram left the Square at 11.22 p.m., and on reaching Barbadoes street stop it pulled up on tho town side of that street to allow several passengers to alight. The car had started again, when a representative of "The Press" saw Harvey quickly dcBcending the steps, apparently realising that this was the stop where he intended to alight. Tho car had just crossed Barbadoes street, and was commencing to get up speed, when Harvey . attempted to step off the front of tho ' trailer, but instead of alighting quickly 'he held on to the handrail for a second or so, and was dragged beneath the v trailer. On looking out and seeing that the -unfortunate man was injured, "The Press" representative pressed the button several times, and ran through to - the'conductor, who immediately rang the emergency bell. On going back 1' Harvey was found lying beside the '«tramlino, with his right leg completely _ >. severed. Ho was groaning, and though .in exeruviating pain 4 appeared quite i conscious. Unfortunately"the victim is - deaf and dumb, so could give no par- * ' iicnlars as to whero he lived, etc. } Dr. Du ican who lives handy to the £ sccno of the accidcnt, was immediately ;i. summoned, and reached the spot with 4 commendable 'promptness. Meanwhile I': a constable and some of the tram pasgengers had applied a tourniquet and ;*< stopped the flow of blood. | 'ihe ambulance ran was summoned I first thing, but had not arrived at midnight, and just as the tram was about to be requisitioned to tako the victim to the H ospi tal, ; other, means of conveyance were fo n an d tho tram continued its journey to the seaside. ;'Mr Harvey is well-known in football -Jf circles in Canterbury, and also throughly out the Dominion. Up till the present > season ho has been a regular member of s-jj the Linwood Club's senior fifteen, and v; despite his affliction, ho was regarded £ as one: of the best forwards the, club iflff produced. He has several times i' represented the province, both at Lan■S caster Park and in other centres. £ That there was no appearance of the g. ambnlance-van after a period of tliirtv ininntes—from a distance which could f bo-walked in a third or, at the most, » half tho time —was tho subject of much I tfinplaint, and unfavourable comment.
