SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
Tho first meeting of the recently ejected South Kuk:;ia Rood Board was hold yesterday, Mr H. J. Harrison presiding'. The I'linirmiiu proposed that, Mr A. J. Magson be appointed chairman, but he decline;!, alii Mr Harrison was unanimously re-c!ccte<l. Air Mugsnti promised to act eVuriiig Mr Hcrri--on s absence irom the district. Mr Gill, the newly elected member, was welcomed to his scat on the Board. On :i ballot being taken Messrs Magson and P. Drummond were :--c!cct.;d as the memborvj to retire at the c-nd of the yea v. Tho tender 01" P. McGirr was accepted for metalling on the lJatr Hil!Lauriston road, and thai of T. Blafckbourne for tha remainder of tho road. Mr Magson gave notice to move at the next nneti.'i? ihxt the' same general rate of Jd in the £ b= etruck for the ensuing year. It was decided to purchase small birds' heads and to apply to the Ashburtou County Council for a supply of poisoned grain. The Ashburton County Council wrote, regarding the supply of pipes for v.ater-racc- crossings. The chairman stated ha did not agree with the action of the County Council in reserving the rjght to say where pipes should bo put. also to refuse to maintain race crossings. Mr Dm runic nd said the Council received about. £4010 from the County in water rate®, and uow under the recent resolution it refused to maintain the crossings in Jto3d Bonrd districts. He contended the Council could clean water-race croß3ing3 at 2s Gd caeh, which was much chenper than the Boards could do it. The chairman said it cost the Council £3 for the pipes, -while it ccst tho Road Boards £5 to put the pipes in. The Board decided to refuse to maintain waterrace crossings in the district for a sum leas than 4s each, whether piped or otherwise.
