ROBBERS ACTIVE.
TWO MELBOURNE SENSATIONS. (By Cable.—Press Association.— Copyright.) (Recoived Mnv 31st, 10.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 31. A sensational attempt at robbery occurred this morning as two postal officials, named Huehes and Macartney, were conveying £2000 to pay the workmen employed on-the new post office in Spencer street. Three men, armed with revolvers, rushed uj> in a motorcar. threw pepper in their faces, struck McCartnev several severe blows on the head, and attempted to grab the bag containing the money. A number of ■workmen cam© upon the scene, juid provented the desperadoes from carrying out their project. They thereupon clambered back into the motor and escaped. McCartncy is in hospital, but. his injuries are not serious. Another sensation occurred at Abbottsford. Mr Gorman, the postmaster, drew £200 from the bank to T>ay a number of soldiers. On returning to the post office be deposited the money in a ban on the counter to attend the telephone. A man entered the office, secured the bag. and bolted. Ho has not been caught. I
