OTAGO WINTER SHOW.

FIRST DAY

(special to "the press.') —ay 30. The Otago Winter Show, opened today bv the Hon. Dr. R. McNab, is right up to the high standard of previous years, the cjuaiity of the farm pioduce and stock being of special excellence, as -was to be expected from the favourable season experienced in the South. Canterbury exhibits wore very successful, and nearly all got into the wize lists. A. Rutherford, junr. (Brookdale) exhibited three pens of merino wethers, and took the prizes without opposition. The Canterbury Central Dairy Company was first in two out of three open i classes for factory butter, and was third , in the other. Levin (North Island), j which had been second to the Central i in two classes, won the third, and was J also , first in the class open to the North Island only. The Softon ex-, hibits were unplaced. Mrs F. G. Frampton, Wakanui, Ashburton, and Mrs F. Fell-,' Hinds, met with great j success m the farmers' butter class other than for fancy, the former winning seven firsts and a second, and the. latter one first and three seconds and a highly commended award. Mrs R. Gason, Temuka, also gained a second and a third x:>rize. There was a fine exhibit of cheese, the Island and Mataura factories being the most successful exhibitors, and the quality of the produce was so uniform that in no fewer than three cases were there ties for riret place. The fruit exhibits were exceptionally good. Mr E. Blakeway (Upper Ricearton) took, most of. the prizes in pears, and was a keen competitor of the Trustees of the late W. J. Tonkin (Central' Otago) in' export apples, winning in one class and coming second in another. Messrs T. S. Innes (Sheffield) and L. T. Wright (Annat) were successful with their exnibits in. the potato classes, the former being first and second in Up-to-Dates, and tho latter first and Mr Innes second in named varieties. Tlie latter was also very highly commended for his collection. *Mr Wright was second in the class for purple-top swedes, there being little to choosc between the first and second exhibits, a nd apparently Mr Wright's had the advantage in weight. ' His exhibit 'of white-fleshed turnips lacked size as" compared with those piaccd. BUTTER AWARDS. (press association telegram.) DUNEDIN, May 30. The following are the butter awards at the A. and I'.
