NEW FREEZING WORKS.
OPENED BY PRIME MINISTER. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND. May 29. The new works erected for the Westfield Freezing Company at Westfield were formally opened by the Prime Minister to-day. About 2000 invited guests attended. Mr Massey said the fertilisation of the soil must bo kept up. They all know the wonderfully useful results that had been obtained by tho use of basic slag. The war had made it increasingly difficult to obtain basic slag, but the Government was doing all it could. The transports returning to tho Dominion were picking up phosphates at Red Sea ports, and fertilisers from India. In regard to tho shortage of ships, the Government had done the best it could under tho circumstances. Referring to post-war trade, Mr Massey said the Dominion must do its level best to keep tho British Empire not only great, glorious, and free, but also self-contained and self-supporting. Though the Dominion should do all possible to produce for itself.. New Zenlanders ought to give Britain a turn when tho opportunity offered.
