AGES OF GENERALS.
OLDER MEN IN GERMANY
There is a remarkable similarity in the ages of the British Generals commanding on the various fronts, as the following list shows: France—General Haig •• • • • .. 54 Eastern Mediterranean—General Monro >5 Egypt—General Maxwell .. ..56 Mesopotamia—General Nixon .. .. 5S South-West Africa —General Botha .. V 2 Sir lan Hamilton, General Monro's predecessor, was 62—the same age as the new Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Sir James Wolfe Murray. With the exception of Falkenhayn, the Chief of General Staff. wh Q is 54, and the Crown Princes of Bavaria and Prussia, who owe their positions to birth rather than ability, there is not a German Commander under 60, in a position of the first importance. Their ages run: — Haeeeler .. 79 Eichhorn .. 67 Ton Biasing .. 71 Emmich .. 67 Von Falkenhauoen 71 MoUke .. 67 Von der Goltz .. 72 Linsingen .. G.i Vcn Khick ..63 Heeringen .. 6-3 Leopold of Bavaria 69 Scholtz -. 64 Von Below .. 69 Gallwitz .. 63 Van Hansen .. CO Bneiow .. 62-« Woyrsch •• 67 Einem •• 6 - It will be seen that the German average is considerably more than ten years above the British.
