GOOD START MADE,

With the departure for camp of the Canterbury quota of the Fourteenth (Reinforcements, stock-taking has now begun for the Fifteenths, who will bo mobilised in a month's time. According to the group area Returns received,by the Canterbury Headquarters yesterday, a good start seems to have been made towards securing the 338 Infantry required. Ten men have been secured by Christchurch, 17 by Tiraaru, 20 by Kaiapoi, and 15 by Nelson. The Greymouth return is not complete. For the 90 Mounted Rifles required, Christchurch has secured 17, Timaru 19 (full quota), Kaiapoi 14 (full quota), and 12. In addition, Christchurch has 22 Infantry 17 prospective non-commissioned officers) and 21 Mounted (including 9 prospective noncommissioned officers); Timaru has 32 Infantry (including 12 prospective noncommissioned officers), and 26 Mounted (including 0 prospective non-commis-sioned officers); Kaiapoi has 3 Infantry (including 2 prospective non-commission-cd officers) and 8 Mounted (including 1 prospective non-commissioned officer); Nelson has 16 Infantry (including 10 prospective non-commissioned officers), and 8 Mounted (including o prospective non-commissioned officers). Sixteen of the Infantry and 10 of the Mounted are available for the Fifteenth Reinforcements. In addition, there are amplo men offering in other branches of the Bervice.

All day yesterday the officials at the Government Recruiting Office in Cathedral square were busily engaged in ing badges to men who have enlistedand are waiting to be called up, and. to men who have been rejected. During the past two days 22 badges were issued to the former class and 74 to the vlatter. The supply has now run out, and possibly will not be replenished for a few days.. 500 ENLISTMENTS FOR THE WEEK

(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, March 10. If every citv in New Zealand took recruiting as * seriously as Auckland does, there "would be no danger or a shortage of men for some time to-come. No fewer than 95 men came forward, to-day, 51 being accepted and 26 <*eThe total registrations for the-week arc 500, and of these 233 have been accepted and 158 deferred forvmmor troubles, which can soon be remeaica. , AUCKLAND'S QUOTA. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND. March 10. v Auckland has been asked to .supply an additional seventy men to fill the caps in' the Fourteenth Reinforcements. Since the new city recruiting station was opened last Saturday-night 450 men have enlisted, and the quota for the Fifteenth Reinforcements- to leave in April, is assured. The ooofc shows that 93G men have registered and 679 passed their medical examination.

SIR JOSEPH WARD IN THE SOUTH.

(FSEES ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, March 10. ,» Sir Joseph Ward unveiled a tablet to enlisted soldiers at Waikiwi ; tonight, and gave a stirring, patriotic: and recruiting address. The Mayor of Invercargill (Mr D. Macfarlane) presided. There was a very-large attendance, and Sir Joseph received a rousing reception. At the conclusion of his speech", a resolution thanking Sir Joseph for his able address, and pledging the meeting to do everything possible to forward recruiting scheme, was carried unanimously, and the meeting closed ..with hearty cheers for Sir Joseph. On Monday Sir Joseph /isits Winton to confer with the citizens regarding the recruiting scheme, and on Monday night will address a meeting at Gore. He goes through to Wellington on Tuesday, but expects to return to Southland in about a week's time, and probably conduct a recruiting campaign. GISBORNE'S ASSISTANCE. (WtESS ASSOCIATION TKLECRAM.)GISBORNE,. March 10. An important conference of - local bodies' representatives was held to-day to hear from the Hons. G. W. RusselL and AV. D. S. Mac Donald the Government's desire with regard to the'new recruiting scheme advanced by the Recruiting Board. The matter was 'previously considered at a conference held in Gisborne, when a resolution in favour of conscription was passed, and northing has been done further with the scheme. . . . After a discussion, during which i* was stated that the Gisborne district had sent over 400 men in excess of its aggregate quota, a resolution was passed unanimously pledging the meeting to offer every possible assistance to the Government scheme.
