COUNTY COUNCILS.

OXFORD

Tho Oxford County Council met on Tuesday. Present—Mr J. Wells (chairman), Messrs. Alex. Baxter, H. Campbell, D. Hawke, and J. McCormack. Messrs J. Cross and E. W. Mayer sent apologies for absence. The Returning Orhcer reported that Mr McCormack, being the only candidate nominated for the vacancy on the Council, had,been declared elected. Two other nominations wore informal. It was resolved that, all outstanding rates should be collected before the 31st inst. The surveyor reported that the Cooper's Creek flume over Gamman's Creek required extensive repairs, and he was asked to make a thorough inspection before the next Council meeting. It was resolved that certain small Humes on tho Cooper's Creek and the Eyre water races should he lengthened or replaced by larger ones. Correspondence was read from Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co. as to tho feasibility of raising water from tho Waimakariri by turbine and centrifugal pump. It ' was resolved to call a public meeting of ratepayers of the Eyre Water Race District to consider the proposals, the chairman and clerk to fix tho date. From the Levels County Council as to £ limit'to the speed of motors, and licensing drivers.—Received. From the District Health Officer re taking stops to improve tho sanitary conditions of the district to prevent the spread of infantile paralysis, should the disease spread to this Island. It was resolved to appoint tho foreman to make a house-to-house inspection of back premises. From the Recruiting Board, Wellington, as-to canvassing the county.—Received. It was considered that some of the returned soldiers should be employed in this direction, also that they would be much more successful at the work than country farmers. Permission was irranted a ratepayer to plough the side of a road on the usual conditions. The following tenders were accepted:—Contract 63. M. Henry, at 4s per chain; contract 66, G. Smith and Son, £2-1.

The llangiora County Council met yesterday. Present: —Messrs V. Worrell (chairman). "VV. Stalker, Ms Stokes, A. Mcintosh, L. Campion, and H. Garrett. «

The Health Inspector's circular letter in reference in infantile paralysis and the necessity for sanitary inspection of premises was read, and it was decided to comply -with it as far as possible. In reply to an application from the Kaiapoi Technical School managers lor a grant towards the purchase of a section for agricultural instruction, it was resolved to state that the Council could not at present entertain the proposal.

Tli e Levels County Council forwarded a motion dealing with the limiting of the speed of motor-cars and motorcycles, and suggested that the Government be asked to allow counties to pass, a by-law in regard to same.—The letter was received.

Mr J. Mills wrote asking, on behalf of a number of anglers who fish in the Ashley river, that, permission be grained to erect an iron gate at the entrance, to the river below the North road bridge, and they would hand it over to the Council. —The application was granted.

The secretary of the Poor of Belgium Fund wrote expressing regret at the Council's decision to discontinue its contributions to the fund.

Consideration of the Waimakarin Harbour Board's Bill was deferred.

The Council's traction engine driver's wages were increased by £'io per yeai. Tenders for cleaning drains were accepted as follows:—Williams and Son, Xos. o and 7 drains; W. J Doggcit, Xos. 2, 3. and !: B. Ward, Xo. 6; Gribble and Jones, drain on' "Wilson's and Rossister's roads.

It was resolved to sue for all rates not, paid by 31a rch 24th.

The clerk was instructed to have new culverts constructed as recommended, and it was left to Mr A. Mcintosh and the eWk to report on the shingling of the Lineside road.

The receipts for the month were £1453 14s 3d. and the bank credit balance £'673 "s.
