WHEN MARINERS RETIRE. • GUILD SUPERANNUATION, SCHEME" FOR CAPTAINS AND OFFICERS. A. movement is afoot to ascertain the possibility of creating a universal superannuation scheme for the shipmasters and.officers of the Merchant Service GuUd of New Zeala.T"'. Captain F. A. Macindoe, secretary of the Guild, returned to Wellington on Wednesday from Auckland, where he attended the quarterly meeting of the members of the Auckland branch of the Guild, at which the proposed universal superannuation scheme was» discussed in favourable terms. There was a record attendance of members. Captain Macindoe is making enquiries on the subject of superannuation funds, and a special meeting of the Guild will probably be called at th<> end of this month to consider the proposal. The scheme will differ from one that wa.9 brought forward a few years ago and rejected, as it will be organised by the Guild and not by any individual shipping company, eo that the benefits will be participated in by all the members of that body, numbering about 500, instead of being confined solely to the employees of one shipping company. It is anticipated that tho employers will be asked lo assist in the establishment. of the fund if the members decide to carry out the plan. A proposal has been brought forward that the Institute of Marine Engineers be invited to assist in the formation of one big joint scheme which, owinsr to the augmented numbers. would be of advantage to the members of both bodieß. When the actual figures with regard to membership, and ages of members, etc., are compiled, and have been dealt with by an actuary, the merits of the scheme can be competently judged.
