WAR FUNDS.
FEELING IN WELLINGTON
(srECIAL TO "THE PIIESS.") "WELLINGTON, February 11. For some time the position regarding war funds has shown signs of becoming acute. In "Wellington people in general are asking why there is anything in the shape of a deadlock, and are wanting to know what will.be done. The popular idea is that so far much of the money raised by voluntary effort is locked up, and at the same timo the people hear of cases of returned soldiers who could very well do with assistance. There is also beyond doubt o strong impression in the public mind that the Government has its eyes on the voluntary funds, and that if it cannot actually use any of them, it -will at least spend nothing out of the State coffers which may be shouldered on to tlit; outside funds.
The conference of representatives of tlie Patriotic Funds, which is to "be held here next Thursday, is being awaited with keen interest. The Minister called the conference, and the Mayor of Wellington is arranging matters. The latter told your correspondent to-night that Auckland and Dunedin had been standing out of the conference, but now Dunedin had come in. and would send representatives. Auckland, however. could not be persuaded to eome.
