Judge Wilson, of the Native Lands Court, has, it is reported, been offered by the Government the position of .Resident Commissioner at Rarotonga. I\Fr R. McCallum. M.P. for Wairau, left Wellington on Friday by the Moeraki for Sydney en route for Egypt. He expects to be absent from New Zealand about three months. Mr J. K. Wanklyn, youngest son of Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn, of Christchurch, who has been at Oxford since August, has been appointed second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, and is at present stationed at Ipswich. The Rev. A. Hardie, who enlisted as a private in the Ambulance Corps and joined the Awapuni mcdieal training camp in November, has been appointed Presbyterian chaplain to the Tenth Reinforcements. Miss Ethel S. Jones, formerly a member of the staff of "The' Press/' who has been engaged (hiring the la-st three years in sub-editorial work on the "Sporting and Dramatic Review," Auckland, lias joined the literary staff of the Auckland "Star." Private advice has been received by Mr Mark "Wright that-his son, Sergeant Frank B. "Wright, of the C.Y.C., who left with the Third Reinforcements, has been admitted to the Pont de Koubbeh Hospital Cairo, suffering from frost-bite in the feet. A Dunedin messago records the death of 'Mr G. C. Israel, chairman of the Otngo Education 'Board, and a very well-known citizen of Dunedin. He was for 39 years in charge 'of tho North Dunedin branch of the Bank of New Zealand, retiring in April, 1911. He was 71 years of age. On Tuesday evoning a number of Styx residents met .it Mr T. Higham's residence and tendered a farewell social to. Private Albert Burgess, who is shortly proceeding to the-front with tho Tenth Reinforcements. During the evening Private Burgess was presented with several articles useful to a soldier. Mr W. A. Kennedy, Wellington manager for the Union Steam Snip Company, has been in indifferent, health for some time, and consequently tho company lias granted him extended leave. Mr S. K. Sleigh, manager of the Christchureh branch, has taken control of the "Wellington office during Air Konncdy's absencc. • Mr Mervyn Wilm« + Horton, son of Mr T. Horton, of Blenheim, enlisted in "Wellington in the Army Service Corps as a private. He was promoted to corporal, sergeant, and sergeantmajor, and has recently received a commission as lieutenant in the Army Service Corps. He was at the time of his enlistment traffic manager in Wellington for the Union Steam Ship Company. Mr Robert McMillan, editor of the Sydney "Stock and Station Journal," is to arrive in Wellington to-morrow by the Manuka; He is to attend the New Zealand Press Association's annual meeting at Rotorua as the delegate from the Independent Cable Service Board. Mr McMillan is the author of a number of books, and ho \vrot 0 much about New Zealand as tho result of a visit in the north three years ago. It is his intention to visit Christchureh and Dunedin before going to the Rotorua conference. Mr J. W. Davis, formerly of the New Zealand Survey Department, has received the appointment of chief draughtsman to the Survey Department of Samoa, which, feince the occupation lof the islands by Great Britain, lias been taken over by the Imperial authorities, and of which Mr Norman H. McDonald, another New Zcaiauder, is chief surveyor. Mr Davis was for 21 years inspecting surveyor in the New Zealand service. Then lie held in succession tho positions of chief draughtsman in the offices in Wellinaton, Christchureh, and Auckland —whither he went for the purpose of reorganising the Land Transfer _ Office. Subsequently he became chief draughtsman in the Wellington district office, and in the head office of the Department. About six years ago Air Davis retired on superannuation, and since then ho has been engaged in private survevin;'- in the Rotorua and Htokianga districts. He will leave for Samoa by the March steamer.
