DEFENCE FORCE.

PROMOTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. District orders by Colonel R, A. Chaffey, V.D., Officer Commanding the Canterbury military district, notify the following promotions of members of the N.Z. Staff Corps: Lieut.-Colonel V.. S. Smythe to Colonel; Captains C. H. J. Brown and W. H. Meddings to Major; and Lieutenants A. H. Burn and H. B. Wheeler to Captain; Sergeant-In-structor A. W. Baldwin, of the Permanent Staff, has been promoted to the rank of Staff-Sergeant-Major. The following appointments and promotions are announced of members of the Territorial Force: Lieut.-Colonel K. Mackenzie, Reserve of Officers, 2nd South Canterbury Regiment, to command the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment, vice Major W. H. Foden. who takes 2nd in command as from January 19th, 1916. Lieutenants Thomas Brereton' and John Gordon McCallum, of the 10th (Nelson) Mounted Rifles, to be Captains. Major Noel Percy Adams, N.Z. Field j Artillery, has been granted the temporary rank of Lieut.-Colonel while employed on the Training Staff of the Expeditionary Force Reinforcements. Major (on prob.) A. J. MeCredie to be Acting-Officer Commanding' South Island Battalion, N.Z. Railway Engineers. The following have been appointed 2nd Lieutenants (on prob.) in the Motor-car Section: John Sead-Gowing and William Milne Hamilton. The following have been appointed Captains in'the N.Z. Medical Corps: Tom Petty, M.D., F.R.C.S., Eng. Dated September 6th, 1915. James Bre&dalbane MacDiarmid. M.8., Ch.B.. Dated September Bth, 1915. The following appointments and promotions on the unattached list are announced :

• Colour-Sergeant John Brown to be 2nd Lieutenant; and is posted to the Queen's Senior Cadets (No. 10 Company). , . The following having been appointed 2nd Lieutenants (on prob.) are posted as under: John Page, to the Linwood Senior Cadets (No. 83 Company); Ernest John Amos, to the Marist Brothers' Senior Cadets (No. 17 Company) ; Owen Farquhar Baker, to *the Christchurch City Senior Cadets (No. 66 Company): Harold Edgar, to the Woolston Senior Cadets (No. 76 Comdaptain G. E. Perkins, 13th (North Canterbury and Westland) Regiment, and Lieutenant (Bandmaster) W. V. Siddall, Ist (Canterbury) Regiment, have been awarded the*' Colonial and Auxiliary Forces' Officers' Decoration, and Sergeant-Major A. C. Fawcett. 12th (Nelson) Regiment. And SergeantMaior J. Stevenson. 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment, have been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces longservice medal.
