Speaking at a recruiting meeting, tlio Prime Minister (Mi Huehes) passionately denounced the "foul parasites who had attached themselves to tho vitals of the Labour party." He said: "There is between syndicalism and unionism a gulf as wide as hell. In the name of Unionism and Labourism, I would pass them out like devils out of swine." Referring to enlistments of trado unionists. Mr Hughes said tho waterside workers of Australia had sent 4000 and tho Australian Workers' Union 20,000 men to the front. ALL FOR THE WAR. CONDITIONS IN NEW CALEDONIA. EXAMPLE TO AUSTRALASIA.' • (Received January 14th, 9.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. January 14. A visitor from Now Caledonia states that every man capable of doing anything whatever has gone to tho war. Only women and children and old men are to be seen in tho streets of Noumea. Pleasures and sports of all kinds havo been laid aside. There is considerable depression in New Caledonia owing to tho falling-off of commerce and shipping, but tho mining industry is well maintained, the demand for nickel being greater than ever for tho manufacture of munitions. In 1913 tho mineral export from New Caledonia comprised:—Nickel ore, 93,196 metric tons; chromo ore, 63,370 metric tons. The value of tho mineral export was £8,441,628.
WAR FUNDS. AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. SYDNEY, January 14. A comparison of tho war funds of New South Wales and Victoria shows that the New South Walos total is £2.204,136, and Victoria £1,2695,782 up to December 31st.
