CONDITIONS IN SAMOA.
PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS.

AUCKLAND, January 3.
Peaceful and prosperous have been established in Samoa, under British administration. Lieut.-Colonel ' Logan returned to Auckland to-day on furlough, and beforo leaving for the south had an interview with tho Hon. James Allen. Vv, Mr Allen afterwards stated tlinfc he had discussed with Colonel Logan a ' number of important questions regarding the administration of the Islands. Colonel Logan gave a good account pf the natives of Samoa and their lovalty to the Administration. The civil atf, ministration had been well established) and tho country was now more prosperous than it had been under German rule. Tho expenditure was lower and tlio revenue greater; the finances had been audited, and tho audit had been satisfactory. Colonel Logan also informed the Minister that tho interning of a,: number of Germans who had been brought to New Zealand during the last few weeks had had a good effect' by removing the possibilitv of trouble. . Tho garrison forces were being main-':' tajned by a system of reliefs, and tho. mobility of the forces had been greatly-,' increased by the provision of horsesH and bicycles for the greater portion of them.
