Yesterday, in the matter of wcather/|j| partnered tho previous day very lontly. The hot nor'-wester which fin*i|i ished off Wednesday'/; swelter wa»|| working at full pressure day, and the heat generally again intense, running to oV"er|| 90 degrees in the shade. Large'|p crowds consequently took advantage the freedom, from work to get to the seaside with all expedition, thera*|»| to enjoy tho ceding comforts of surf-fe ing. All the morning cars to ton and Sumner contained large Those sportingly inclined travelled tar a s tho Brighton racecourse, whfi#|pg the local trotting club opened theu***s Summer Meeting. The big event the day was the River and Rose Ca£||! nival at Haglcy Park. This attractoojgp niauv thousands of city and suburban ''ss£ residents, who were to be seen pilgrimag-SSjj 1 ;: ing to the Park from all throughout the day. Late in thtf'fe afternoon the wind changed round t*sl; the sou'-west, and tho air became cooler. The sky clouded over, and * I$M few spots of rain fell, but nothing J s& serious. Another change of wind piace in the evening, when an sprang up and put an end to the heat :•£& wave for tho time being. ••: jjf
