Richard Everard "Webster, Lord"v Alverstone, was born on i»4i'. ana received his education *; at King's College < and Uuarterhouse 1 Schools, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where ho gained a Foundation 5 Scholarship and graduated in both the '4 Mathematical and Classical Tripos. He % was a fino athlete, being one of the best t | middle-distance runners in England. He I was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn «' in 18(53, and joined tho South-Ea&tcra", (thou home) circuit. He was afterwards "' appointed to the ancient but honorary r pfßces of Tubman and Postman in the - Court of Exchequer at Westminster. * Ho was made Queen's Counsel in 1878. Ho had been extensively engaged i Q t, most or the heavy commercial and rail-A" way cases of the day, and besides ha>->£«* iug a large general practice, he had"-?]] appeared in numerous appeal cages mlgj the House of Lords. He contested ||| Bcwdley at tho election of 1880, but-W without succets. of 18&5 he successfully stood for tJie;s| Isle of "Wight, and in 1886 he j again returned, and represented ! constituency till IGOO. In 1893-1 he was one of the British represent** tires in the Behrin-; Sea arbitration •£ ease. He was appointed Ma§tcr of tho ' 5 Rolls in 1000. and in the same year ',<£ became Lord Chief JufHcc of England ■% in succession to Lord Russell of KH-?'~< lowen. which nosition he occupied till* £ ho retired in 1913. \% MR MARK JUDSON*. t A well-known resident of Woodend, ■* Mr. Mark Judson. died yesterday at the .> nursing home, Kaiapoi, in his SOthA vear.
