MAGISTERIAL. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Two male, first offenders were each fined us, in default 21 hours' unprisonl ment. ■ • - I THEFT, i Joo Cook, a Chinaman, 7-1 I years of age,, appeared > on remand, with stealing a rug ralued -at : ; 30s, on December Btn, the property ot I Hcnrv Joan Conway, aTso another rug, jvalue'd at 10s, oh or about the samo 'date, tho property of some person unknown. He was also charged with be-' ing an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful moans of support. »Ho was further charged withstealing various articles of clothing at Norwood, on or about tho samo elate, valued at £-1 16s Bd. the property of tho New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Association. j He -was (sentenced to three months ! imprisonment on the charge of stealing I the articles of clothing, and one [month's imorisonment for stealing the prug valued at 30s, tho sentences to be -cumulative. On the other charges a ( conviction was recorded agaiii6t him.4 .Stanley Hern and James -Hoc/wan (Mr .Donnelly) wore each charged with the. 'theft of writing pads, valued at 6s, tho property of Grace Jackson. They •wore each convicted and ordered to como up for sentenco when called upon, and also ordered to pay Ik 6d each. Jn connexion with this offence, five lads were charged with assisting in tho theft. Threo of them were severely admonished, and ordered to pay Is 6d each towards tho cost of tho pads. Tho charges against tho other two wcro dismissed. ASSAULT. "William Iteinke (Mr Weston) was charged with assaulting Albert James Allan, a young lad, by kicking him in the back. Accused was fined 10s without costs. BREACH OF GAMING ACT. John Doyle (Mr Donnelly), a fish hawker, appeared on two charges of a l breach of the Gaming Act', by selling Pak-a-poo tickets on November 23rd, h the King George Hotel, to Constabio I Le'Souer, who was in plain clothes. Defendant was convicted and lined £_0 and costs on the first charge, and £5 on tho second. BY-LAW BREACHES. ! For cvcling on the footpath George Harry Banfield. William iDiummond, Albert Gordon, Isaac Lewis (Mr Malley), Geoffrey RovolJ, and A'nnio Trcweni were each faned js and costs, and Edward O Bnen (Mr Thomas), who stated ho was a poor man with a large family, was convicted and discharged. For motor-cycling on t_e footpath Robert James Marshall was fined 10s and costs. Robert Beaty, Cyril Wyatt Collins, Frank Hammond, \Villiani Keith, and \rthur Reeves were each fined 10s and costs for cycling at night wthout a licht For a similar offence Joseph Cawo'od and Eric Bayliss were fined os and 7s resnectively without costs. for motoring at an excessive speed over street intersections, Jesse Thomas Blakemore (who was. 10s for r reckless driving), Henry po»n <*« r Cassdv). For driving on the wrong side of tho road over tne Bank of New crossing Charlie Jaino was fined 10s and costs.
For driving a motor-cai' having no identification mark, A. E. Anderson was fined os and costs, and for driving a car having an inadequate identification mark, Leslie H. lirakc was convicted and discharged. , For failing to drive in the line oi_ street intersection, thereby cutting oh a corner on the wrong side of the road, Charles Cox was fined 20s and costs, and for driving an unregistered motorj car he was convicted, and discharged. L For recklessly driving a hansom cab, Xeslio Fleming'was fined 10s and costs. ! : One a charge'of overloading his motorcar with passengers, Frank McTeaguc was fined 10s. George F. Scott. (Mr Thomas) was charged with permitting an unlicensed motor-driver in his employ to ply lor hire. Mr Loughnan appeared for the prosecution, . A fine* of 20s and-costs was imposed. For allowing their horses to wander, Tetor Fergus • Canipboll was fined 10s and costs, and Thomas Hill and Thomas Pickering were each fined os-aud costs. Daniel Coleman was convicted and discharged on a charge of allowing seven he"d of cntt'o to wander. Frederick Charles Williams was fined 'us and costs for erecting a building j .without giving duo notice as required by the Now Brighton Borough Council.
SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT. For failing to keep a holiday book and lor failing to notify the inspector when working employees over ten hours daily,.-A. Dodds (Mr M alley) was fined Is without costs, iuid 5s and costs respectively. For failing to keep.a wages and time-book in a proper manner, George. P. Payne- (Mr Hoban) was lined os and costs. ~ . Pcrcv Wilkes (Mr Donnelly) was charged with making false entries in his time and wages book. The offence consisted of entering 15s a week in his book as paid to a female employee, and in reality paying her 12s 6d. Ho had, however, since paid her the difference A fine of £l and costs was imposed.
IUSSERVED JUDGMENT. In the case of A. C. Champney (Mr Donnellv) v. H. H. Cook (Mr Johnston), fn which plaintiff claimed the : sum of £5)2, bein~ the balance of £100 paid to defendant by plaintiff on January Ist, 1914, judgment was given for the plaintiff for £80 and costs. Ernest John Ruddick, boilermakcr, -.vho va.< charged with employing boys as labourers, instead of apprenticing them, Mr Weston,' for the defendant, contended that under the award the employment of boys as labourers was not specifically prohibited by the The Magistrate inflicted a fine of 10s on each of the two charges. James Savage (Mr Cassidy) licensee oi the White Swan Hotel, was charged with failing to exhibit a time-table. He was fined os and costs. Y Williams (Mr Lpliam). a baker, appeared on a charge of failing to pay an cmolovee wages according to award rate. He was fined £1 and costs. K Harding, the employee, was lined 10s for accepting less than the award rate of wages. „ , , , , Steel Brothers (Mr Rowo;, butchers, were charged with failing to pay the award rate of wages to n helper. Itwas stated that defendants bad paid the arrears. A fine of 10s was imposed . „ • , V \ P. B. Flood (Mr Cassidy), was ! charged with failing to pay award rate of wages, and also with failing to allow San assistant a holiday. He was fined •10s on each charge. ► (i. Common (Mr Thomas) Was charged with tailing to pay travelling time to an employee, and was fined 10s and costs. Joseph Bivan (Mr Nieholls), licensee of the Lancaster Park Hotel, was fined 4f>s on a charge of failing to exhibit a time-table. T. Kintaid was fined 10s on a charge of failing to notify the employment of a non-unionist.
