BRITISH CURRENCY NOTES.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE FBISS." Sir, — I have a brother at Gallipoli, from whom I received a letter in which ho asked mo. to do a little business for liini. _ Enclosed was a currency note of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" for ten shillings (10s), issued by the "Secretary to the Treasury. ' I called at the Post Office and over the counter for it to be cached. The young man behind the counter evidently thought it was a joke; lie wanted to know what allelic funny .Japanese figures were on it; and where I got it, and did I hare it sent to me. \\ hen I explained to him what it was T. was told that lie had never seen one beiore, and had had noinstruc- ! lions about them. I then went to a bank. I was told there that the bank could not cash it, but was advised to go to die hotel a lew doors away, that I might get it cashed there on payment of sixpence exchange. Now. I know nothing about notes or exchange (worse luck), but it seems to me there is something wrong here. A man on active, service sends a note which is evidently the value of ten shillings (10s) in the United Kingdom, and in Egypt, and by the time it. reaches New Zealand it drops in value sixpence (6d). and you are placed under an obligation to the publican or some other persons to get it cashed. .Surely a note issued by the British Treasury is good enough to be honoured by the New Zealand Government. J would be pleased if you would enlighten nie it little.—Yours, etc.. F.P.C. L.v tU-lton.
[We have lnude enquiries concerning ! this matter, ami we find that there I is nothing to compel the Post Office ! or the banks to cash British Treai sury bills. In practice, however, Mich bills are cashcd provided they are received from a proper quarter. For soldiers in uniform the bills are cashed on sight and fi'Oo of exchange; othc parties are required I to pay excliangc. There aro no j - "funny Japanese figures" 011 a I Treasury bill.''—Ed.
