The Munitions Sub-committee of the Society of Chemical Industry, is undertaking researches with the object of making Australia independent of outside supplies for the making of high explosives. BED CROSS FUND 3, MISSION FROM AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, September 25. Mr S. Whitta Thornton, .secretary of the Mount Morgan Company, formerly a prominent accountant in New Zealand, has been appointed secretary of the committee ot ten business men to proceed to Egypt to administer the Red Cross funds. Two hundred offered their ecrvtces. Mr S. Whitta Thornton is well-known to manv Wellington and Christchurch people, having lived here for some time. He arrived in Wellington from England about fifteen years ago, and joined one of the Government Departments in Wellington. Subsequently® he became accountant n* Nelson for Messrs S. Kirkpatrick and Co. Later on he was in partnership with Messrs Badham and Biss in their Christchurch branch, and after that he practised in this city as an accountant on his own behalf. Some time before leaving for Australia he was connected with various timber companies in the Wellington provincial district.
ANTI-ALIEN LEAGUE. SYDNEY, September 25. The Anti-Alien League is petitioning the Federal and State Parliaments, requesting the internment of all enemy aliens, unnaturalised or naturalised. AFTER THE WAR. INTERNATIONAL POLICE SYSTEM ADVOCATED. MELBOURNE, September 26. Mr Fisher, in reply to tho Trades Hall deputation, expressed tho opinion that the only system of world government worth thinking about was a con•gregation of nations with a socialistic organisation and the establishment of International Courts to determine in equity the rights of nations, and with power to punish nations just as individuals are now punished for violation of the law.
