BRAVE COMMANDER'S END.
WHAT LIEUTENANT-COLONEL STEWART ACCOMPLISHED.
FRESH FACTS BROUGHT TO LIGHT. Writing to a friend in Christchurch, a .well-known member of the Canterbury [nfantry Battalion, describing the initial operations against the Turks after the landing, says:— "Wo wore hurried straight forward into the firing line, and were fighting for our lire s within a couple of hours. Our battalion was ordered to reinforce the left Hajik, and could not have possibly been assigned a hotter task. There was not an inch of cover excepting a little loose scrub and the Turke continued to sweep and rake the ground with machine-sun fire. The execution thin- did was awful, and oniy the noble command of Lientenant-Colonel Maobean Stewart prevented the enomv from driving us back. "Colonel Stewart cams upon the lino thin and broken, gathered his men together and led them bade to the resistance. It was a wonderful effort, but no one shall over forgot tho magnificent courage of the man and the gallant save that he effected at tie cost of his life."
