Ho was —lucated at the South School, Invercargill, and the Caversliam Public School, and was a carpenter by trade. Sergeant Martin was a member of th© Dunedin Kifle Volunteers, and won several trophies for shooting. Wjien the Territorial system came into force he joined B Company (4th Otago Regiment), and worked his way up to the position of colour-ser-geant. H© was a member of the Dunedin Football Club, and. when the call came for men, Sergeant M_rtin """as ono of the first to enlist.
