ATTACKS IN MASSED
COLUMNS

LONDON. March 8
A Russian artillery officer, •writing of tho Germans "temporary advanjt' ago ,, in East Prussia, says:—"lf I had been in authority I would simply- have hanged their commanders because of their senseless and criminal sacrifice of troops. At fijrst wo drenched them, charging in massed columns with shrapnel. Still they came on. Then we used case-shot, keeping up an incessant .fire until the dead were piled in heaps of from three to f our thousand. Half an hour later a second attack ivas repulsed. Before dusk a third was made, with the same result. Tho slaughter caused a feeling of nausea. Wo marvelled at the stupidity of these efforts in the face of fire against which they were powerless. The enemy -were swept away like the ash of a cigarette."
