CHARGES AGAINST BURNHAM ESCAPEE.
(pnKSS ASSOCIATION* TEI-EGRAM.) TIMARU,-January 11-■ A youth named Birch, a Burnliani escapee, who is awaiting trial for a murderous assault on his employer, named O'Conneli. at Clandeboye. on November 7th. was charged before the Magistrate to-day on five counts of forging O'Connell's namo to cheques, and uttering them to Temuka shopkeepers, the total amount involved being £15 10s. Ho was also charged with the theft of various articles and money of a total value of £"> 10s, the property of O'Connell also with the theft of a bicycle, value £8, at Mitcham. on August 12th, and breaking and entering a dwelling at Mitcham on the same date and stealiug a watch and chain and £4 los in cash. Accused had admitted the offences to the police, and was committed for trial. Some of tho stolen articles ami £" 2s 6d in money were found in accused's possession. The articles wereordered to be returned to their owners. and tho money to be divided among the losers.
