PROPOSED CHRONIC WARD.
TO ""HE BDITOR OV "THB PRESS.'*
Sir, —"Will you permit mc, through your columns, to one© more bring before the public the crying need there is for a chronic ward in tho Christchurch Hospital. In doing so it may be well to state that two years ago the Hospital L-ady Visitors' Association undertook to raise the funds necessary for the building of such a ward, much, encouraged thereto by the promise of £1000 from tho late Mrs Townend. Unfortunately this gift was not mentioned in her will, and her heir absolutely refuses to fulfil her wish, or to giv© anything whatever towards the erection of this much-need-ed ward. Comment is unnecessary. Miss Maude, who is well qualified to speak on the subject, says: —"It is undoubtedly the one institution roost needed in Christchurch." So far the people of Christchurch and North Canterbury have not given the support that was hoped for. A few people, considering tho number of wealthy people in the citr and country districts, have given liberally. A great many of those who have not niucii of this world's wealth have given generously. Thirty-<fivo State scftools (most of them very small ones) have contributed £75 lls od. The boys of liurnham School ateo cent £- los. A £reat many friends have worked hard. Tho sum now in hand is £118-4 Wis, not including interest, but including a promise of £"21 from the Masonic Benevolent Fund, not sent in. This, with Miss Campbell's legacy (£600), makes tho entire result £103-4 Mis. If tho ward is to bo a credit to North Canterbury- as much more will bo required. 4 Tho ward is for the accommodation of chronic and incurable patients, who have no means whatever of procuring tho care and comfort they so terribly need in their own homes. Somo, poor souls! have no homes. Surely the Canterbury public will not refuse to give what'is necessary to provide this refuge for them. —Yours, etc., SUSAN l>. TRIPP--30 Holly road.
