INDUSTRY IN DUNEDIN.
INTERESTING ASPECTS
(SPKCIAL TO "THE THESS.")
DUNEDIN, January 11
Several aspects of industrial trade in Dunedin are exceptionally interesting, and indicate that the quality of practical patriotism is mixed. Work is generally less than normal for the beginning of a year, and prospects are only fair, at their best.
■ Some comment i<; expressed in industrial circles as to the various methods by which local bodies, companies, and enterprising individuals express their patriotism. Tho criticism of local bodies is more than ordinarily favourable. It appear,? that managing corporations are doing their utmost to assist local industry by proceeding with work involving the use of manufactured material, such as ironwork, castings, and so on., also by gouig on with schemes which absorb \inskilled labour. It is thought, however, that if municipal finance can afford an additional strain, an efiort should be made by all the local bodies to epend to tho limit of their authority- while' tho war laets.-
Among firms and companies, enterprise a≤ regards extension of premises and plant is unusually measured; indeed, in several instances prepared works have been postponed. There appears to be an "unco cautiousness or spirit among people with money.
