The long spell of dry weather ha 3 broken at last. All day Saturday rain vras falling heavily, but Sunday •was a bit brighter with occasional showers. The rain was badly needed, and will help tho crops along nicely, although it is too ]ate for the dairy farmers, who are complaining that on aecouni of the dry -weather their milk cheques are only two-thirds of what they should be. A number of the Sisters of the English Church from Christchurch and also Dnnodin are afc present having a holiday at To Wai Pounamu Maori Girl/ College.
The railway ballast team is at present working a gang in the pit at Mandeville, re-metalling this line between Ohoka and Kaiapoi. after which they will do tho North Hue up to Rsngiora.
.Mrs D. Chapman, a very old resident of thia district, died at, her residence at Wcthcral on Saturday morning. Her husband, Mr I>iodrich 'Chapman, predeceased her about six weeks ago. - ' The quarterly meeting of the Ohoka Methodist Church was held in the Horrelville Church on Thursday evening! Tho Rer. J. F. Martin presided. The chairman reported that tho following amounts had been raised:—Foreign missions £32 10s, home missions £28* 10s, Papanui Orphanage £6 10a, Belgium Fund i.'l 3. An additional £1 10s was voted towards the Orphanage, the work of which was considered very satisfactory. The balance-sheet showed that the income for the quarter was "s 6d less than the expenditure after three Sundays' collections were given to the various funds. Mr Lindsay was elected representative to the Conference, with Mr Pearce as substitute. The Rev. Mar Martin was granted leave of absence on Sundays January 34th and 31st. Th» following officials were elected for the year:—Circuit stewards, Messrs A. Mortland and R. Downs. stow* ards—Ohoka: Messrs L. Orchard, W. Steele, W. McCann; Stcannanoa: Mr J. White; East Eyreton: Mr VF. Beal; Horrelville: Messrs A. Hurley. J. Graham, and Dounis. Sacramental "stewards : Mesdames Atkinson. Martin, Wai* ker, White. Blackmore, Shepp&rd' Bennett, and Miss A. Graham.
