Bread was raised to 9Jd per 4lr> loat yesterday. Tho rain has improved the prospects for new wheat. Many 40-bushel cropsare spoken of. Mr W. Barford, of Waimate, is representing South Canterbury at the Bakers' Conference, to bo opened in Christchurch to-day.
The names of seventeen volunteers tc join the reinforcements were taken in Waimatc. on Saturday. The fears of a water famine were dissipated by the good rains of the weekend. Tho creek is now carrying a considerable stream. Mr Hamilton's rain gauge showed 39 points on Friday morning, 25 on Saturday, and 130 on Simday, or within five points of two inchei for the threo days. Tip committee of the Waimate Racing Club met on Saturday, Mr N. .Francis presiding. Tenders were received for the enlargement of the grandstand, and that of J. Menzies, &t £234, was accented. The chairman reported on behalf of the Ground Committee, that the work in connexion with the new totalisator house was almost finished, and satisfactory to tho committee. # Subject to his consent, it was resolved' that Mr W. Freeman be appointed clerk of the course, at a fee of £2 2s pc: daT. ih succession to the late Mr J. W. Freeman. Tho next meeting was fixed for Saturday, to deal with tho matter of stabling, and to appoint two stewards.
