MONDAY, JANUARY 9
"Since our last report we are sorry to announce a still further loss to the growing grain crops. The gale of last Tuesday is considered to have been more severe than the one last season, which did so much damage to tho standing corn. ■ Last year.the great heat assisted in the. destruction of the grain by making the almost ripe straw so brittle that the ear was easily broken off or shaken, hut this year the damago appears to have been done by tho wind alone, bruising and beating out the unrip, grain and breaking down tho straw. Wheat, barley, and oats have all suffered, but the first-named mast severely: From careful enouiries of farmers south of Christchurch. we find the same damase has been done by tho gale, especially on the 110W broken and eonsequentlv urvsheltered land. The blight is also said to be spreading rapidly, and many crops aro renorted as .swarming with caterpillars, which is thought will take nearly all the blight and wind havo left.."
