NOTES ON THE PLAY
(SfKCIAL to "the prkss.") WELLINGTON. January 9
To-day's cricket was spoilt by rain. Very light showers fell in the morning, but soon after eleven a beginning was made. Canterbury won the toss and elected to bat. though the wicket was much softer than would be supposed, considering the lightness of the showers which had fallen.
Carlton, who was sent in with Bishop, took strike to th© fast bowler. Robinson, and got some nasty knocks. In th© first over th© left-hander should hay© been caught at point before he had scored, as he cut one low to Baker at point, who carpeted it. Carlton was never at home to the fast stuff, and was eventually caught at third man in having a slash at an overpitched one. Bishop, in the meantime, was scoring freely, mostly at the other end, getting tho* lengthy left-hander,' Southall, away to th© leg boundary several times in fine style. He also drove Robinson beautifully along the carpet to th© off boundary. He was fortunate when, snicking one behind, he was dropped by the wicket-keeper. Burns. Hickmott played with great caution, but got a lovely cut behind point off Gibbes for 4.
After an hour's play the rain cam© down, and th© gam© was, at about 4 o'clock, postponed for th© day. the score being 68 for one wicket (Bishop not out 43). Fivo bowiers were tried, but none or them seemed dangerous except Robin-
son. Bennett was left out of Canterbury's team, it being thought that McLachlan could bo of more service on the damp wicket than th© old war-horse. The rain, of course, spoilt th© gat©, which was expected to ho big.
