Showers of rain fell this morning in Wellington, but cleared somewhat before 11 o'clock, when the Phmket Shield Match, Canterbury v. Wellington, was commenced. Tho rain had done very little damage to the wicket. Canterbury won the toss, Carlton and Bishop opening the innings. Rain fell again as the Wellington team took the field.
Bishop sent his first ball to th© boundary for four, and repeated this performance with a leg stroke off the last ball of the over. From the fourth ball of Robinson's second over Carlton gay© a chance to Baker # at point, but the fieldsman dropped it. After two overs Southall was taken off in favour of Brice. Robinson found a difficulty in making his usual fast pace on the wet wicket. Off the last ball of Robinson's fifth over Carlton gave a chance, which was accepted by Gibbes. 28-^l. Hickmott commenced to score with a couplo of singles. Brie© was relieved by Hiddleston. With his score at 30, Bishop gave a chanco behind the wicket to Burns, who let it pass. Brie© went on again, and Gibbes relieved Robinson. Hickmott cut Gibbes to th© boundary for four.
At 12*30 p.m. play was stopped because of the rain, the score being 63 for one wicket, Bishop not out 43. At 4 p.m., the rain not ceasing, th© game was adjourned till 11 a.m. on Monday.
