"At the present time the fundamental provisions of the British Constitution have been practically abrogated, and people acquiesce as they would probably not have done in the days of Charles 1., because they know it will not be abused. Though there is considerable difference between the Australian system of local navies and that by which colonial ships become without qualification mombers of the Imperial Fleet, •when war broke out the difference disappeared, and it will never arise as long as the spirit which now imbues the colonies exists. The enthusiastic response of the people of the IXominions to the call shows that the principles on which the Empire is based are firm and sound, and that the cause is just. There is in the great co-operation nothing of the spirit of aggression or of militarism; indeed, it is against such a spirit that we are in arms. ,, "DO NOT "WORRY TOO MUCH." Captain Norman Leslie., of the Riflo Brigade (since killed) in a letter home: —• "Try and not worry too much.about the "war, anyway. -Units, individuals, cannot count. Remember, we are writing a new page of history. Future generations cannot b© allowed to read the decline of the British Empire and attribute it to us. We live our little lives and die. To some are given chances of proving themselves men and to others no chance comes. Whatever our individual faults, virtues or qualities may be, it matters not, but when we are up against big things let us forget individuals and lot us act as one great British unit, united and fearless.
