AN IMPORTANT INNOVATION.

NEW SODA" FOUNTAIN ROOM

A few steps separate the' every-day-ness of the busy street from a veritable corner of Fairyland! This startlingly pleasing impression was conveyed to visitors last Tuesday to Messrs AY. 11. Cooko and Son's new soda fountain room. There is nothing like it in Mew Zealand, and it promises to become a popular and pleasurable rendezvous during tho stifling heat of tho coming summer days and. nights.

The basement of tho firm's wellknown premises in High street has been magically transformed. Jtama flooring, Wunderlich ceiling, a plentiful array of natty tables and chairs, a.largo mirror handsomely framed in polished American oak, and the large soda fountain—all of silver —with its solid marble counter, present a fascinating picture. Ranged alongside the counter aro several quaint American stools, upon which, like their American cousins, tho youth and beauty of Christchurch. will daintily perch whilst discussing some of thq many tempting and palate-tick-ling delicacies of the soda fountain. At night the scene -will receive additional brilliancy from the many coloured electric lights. What -will yon liave? Wliat can yon get? What you will. There is nothing in tho long catalogue of ice creams and coda drinke that cannot be produced at a moment's notice. Could anything be more delicious, more cooling, than these preparations, served by smart, attendants attired in terra cotta-hued costumes with Quaker aprons and pique caps and collars to complote an attractive -uniform? If the latest high-grade confectionery and chocolates aro desired, tho soda-dispensers trill provide them. The room is forty feet by forty feet in dimensions, and ventilation has been provided for —the air is kept pure by suction fans, and stirring fans keep tho atmosphere cool and breezy, 'ixiero is seating accommodation for quite two hundred persons. It is clear evidence of the enterprise of Messrs W. H. Cooke and Son that they havo spent over one thousand pounds in equipping and fitting tip this sumptuously-ap-pointed room. The structural alterations and the fitting of tho neir room were done by Mr G. L. Bull. 1
