TIMBER INDUSTRY.
IMPROVED CONDITIONS ON THE j WEST COAST. i (PRESS ASSOCIATION" ____-»__-.) HOKITIKA, July 10. The timber industry on the West Goast continues to improve under better condition- and prices, chiefly owing to better organisation amongst millers and an increased demand from Australia, which is taking large supplies of NeAV Zealand pine. There is a difficulty in supplying requirements owing to the lessened production from the mills, many of which have cut out handy supplies, aud in conseqteiice logs have, in many instances, to do conveyed seA-oral miles, and then' railed to port for shipment. Better selling values somewhat compensate for the difficulty, and outside capital is being attracted. One large mill recently-changed ownership, the capital value being over £20,000, and- it is rumoured that other consolidating interests- are being made with a view to cheapening the cost of production, and ensuring better facilities for handling. The future prospects of the trade, which has suffered somewhat during the last two years, are good, particularly if labour is available. There is a good demand for competent men.
