WHAKAMARAMA LAND AND TIMBER COMPANY.
ACTIVE OPERATIONS STARTED
A concern in which the shares are held in Canterbury is the Whakamarama Land anid Timber Company, whose base of operations is in the Tauranga district. The company was formed about # eighteen months ago, and news has just been received of the first shipment of timber to Auckland. Since the company was formed it has had to construct a tramway from its timber area to its wharf at Tβ Puna, besides erecting a sawmill and installing machinery.
The first shipment of timber was made on May 19th. The previous Thursday the scow Moa, owned by Messrs Leyland and (yßrienj of Auckland, arrived at Tauranga #ith a locomotive, for the Whakamarama Company and plant for the company's big mill. She took 9000 ft of timber, and is to continue in the trade, ,for which she is specially fitted, as she draws only six feet of water when fully loaded, and was able to leave the company's wharf on May 19fh on a three-quarter tide.
