ASHBURTON.

At a meeting of the newly-formed i Ashburton Choral Society, Mr F. H. Morton was appointed conductor, Sir H. A. Humphreys deputy-conductor, Mr H. M. Segers treasurer, and Mr W. G. Roberts auditor, with tho following as a committee: —Messrs H. A. Humphreys, H. A. Gates, F. H. Morton. C. B. Gass, and H. S. Gardner. Mr W. T. Lill has given the following notice of motion for the next meeting of the Ashburton County Council: "That the Council advertise to ascertain if there are any workers in this county who would like the Council to build * workers' dwellings according to tho Counties Amended Act, 1913, section 31, and to state in what locality they would wish them erected." The Ashburton Poultry and Combined Winter Show, to be held on P'riday and Saturday, promises to be .a big success. The total entries in the poultry sections number 595, as against 654 last year. The apparent falling-off is to- be accounted for by the fact that the Champion Show is to be hold in the following week, and

a number of exhibitors are holding back some of their best birds for tho bigger event. For the Winter Show section a total of oIG entries has been received, as against 403 for 1913. For the poultry sections there- will b«"> an excellent show of Leghorns. Orpingtons, Game, Hamburgs, and Wyandottes, while in the titility classes the total entries constitute a record. There is a total entry of 50 dogs, as against 45 last year. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Farmers* Union was held on Saturday afternoon, the chairman of the branch, Mr -T. R. Simpson, presiding. Mr James Scott, of Methven. and Mr G. Kelly, of Lyndhurst, were elected members of the branch. Mr W. T. Lill. one of the delegates who attended the conference of the North Canterbury district recently held in Chrisichurch, gave an interesting resume of the principal business transacted at that conference. He remarked that one phase of the gathering that struck him as being particularly gratifying was the number of young farmers wlio were present, all full of vigour and enthusiasm.
