LEVEL RAILWAY CROSSINGS.

♦ DANGER NOTICES. The Mayor nas received -a circular letter from the Minister of Railways stating that, with the view of giving persons driving motor and other veuicles along roads intersecting the railway line., ample warning of the proximity of level railway crossings, the Railway Department will be prepared to supply warning boards of a distinctive character for erection on main roads which cross the railway. The Minister added that *it was not obligatory on the Railway Department to provide or erect such notice boards, but in view of the fact that the advent ot motor traffic vehicles had completely altered the circumstances of road traction, the Department had decided to invite the local bodies to co-operate in an endeavour to render travel along the main roads intersecting railways as safe as possible for vehicles travelling in the direction of railway crossings. It was proposed that the notice boards should be erected on the road at a distance of 150 or 200 yards from the railway crossing. The Department would be prepared to supply and erect the notice boards in suitable* positions, provided the Council would agree to maintain them. '
