Before Mr Hutchison, S.M., at Riverton to-day. a married woman named Nellie McCrcath. was charged that, being i.he mother of, and Laving the custody of,- Gladys McCreath, aged 4$ years, she did wilfully ill-treat the child in a manner likely to cause it unnecessary suffering. From the evidence it appeared that on May loth the attention of a constable was directed to the child, and on examination he found it a mass of bruises from head to heel, with somo abrasions and marks about its face. Tho little one was taken to a doctor, who, upon examination, described it as a shocking case. The woman was lined £10 and costs, in default two months' imprisonment with hard labour. The custody of the child was taken from her.
