CITY WATER SUPPLY.

THE RECENT BREAK,

CITY SURVEYOR'S REPORT

The chairman of the Water Supply Coin mittee (Cr. W. H. Cooper) has received the following report from the City Surveyor (Mr A. Dudley Dobson) regarding the break in the main on Saturday:—"l beg to report that on Saturday morning the cast-iron syphon Vibicb- crosses over tho storm-watjar sower in Moorhouso Avenue at Colombo street broke and the raserroir water had to Be shut off. As this is the second time this has happened, and, from the unstable nature of the •ground l , likely to -happen again, I deemed % it advisable to oo_cf_r with Mr Cuthbert, th» Drainage Board's ESngifneer, and proposed laying t__e main through the storm-water sower, making provision for the uninterrupted flow of the storm-water by a large sump and manhole. Mr Cuthbert agreed to this on the understanding that should it not work satisfactorily, the syphon should be again reverted to. This permission enabled mc to connect up at once with a straight steel pipe which no vibration will effect, and the elasticity of the joints will allow of settlement. The main just north of Moor house avenue has settled considerably eince it was laid, and last Christmas the ground at this oorner feubsidod owing to tho caving-in of an abandoned pipe sewer. Tbe town was kent supplied from Sydenham until a temporary connexion was made and the reservoir supply connected up, until Sunday afternoon, when the Sydenham supply was again connected until the pipe-laying was finished, about 4 a.m on Monday morning. Foreman James and his men worked exceedingly well, and no time was lost. "Tho sump for the storm-water sewer is in hand.

"Tho 12-inch Sydenham main runs from Carlyle street to within 30 chains of the pnmping-station, where there h a junction, to which it could ho •connected. It would cost £800 to make the connexion, but if that wero done, there would be two mains which could bo connected with the reservoir, oither sinp.ly or together, with also a considerably increased delivery."
