GISBORNE,. aiarch 13. Peculiar circumstances attended the . burning of Mr R. A. Large's house at : jlangapara. 3lr Large was at home alone. Whilo in the garden* about 1 ' p.m.he observed ,smoke coming but of the house, and on going into the. kitchen found that a piece of wood had fallen out of the range and had burned -•". through the floor. The fire was sub-"--dued. It broke out afresh several times, but on each occasion was put'v out by buckets of water. Between 3.30 .p and 9 p.m. tbe fire ro-started in two or three places, but wns put out each - ' 'twine, and Mr Large kept,.a 'clrwe- ; watch until 6.15 p.m., when everything ':.'"- appeared safe. He then went a short distance away for tea. He had nob I! been there long when he observed that :--i the houso was on fire a3a in. thia time " it had too strong a hold to beput out, and' the building and contents were destroyed. --- Two motor-cars havo been destroyed by fire during the last few days. Mr J C. Bnnnott's car burst into flames '' whilst it was being tried on a hill, :'\ owing, it is thought, to a leaky carburettor, and Mr C. G. Piesse lost his r= car last night through a short circuit, in an electrical connexion. *-

A threshing combine, owned by Mr J. W. Strachan, of Kaiapoi, was destroyed by fire on Mr W. J. Guy's" farm at Fernsido yesterday.

At 12.30 this morning the Fire Brigade were summoned to 57 Victoria street, a two-storeyed building occupied by J. (*. Fleming, motor and cycle merchant. The fire originated in the top floor. Slight damage was done to the building, but the contents, wer* not affected. v
