CHEERS. ENGLISH AND COLONIAL.
xo ths editor or "tub rasas."
Sir,—l would ltko, through your columns, to thank Mr T. 0. Hatton for his timely and sensible letter, relative to the above, in your Wednesday's issue. The description he gives of tho colonial cheer, "ip-pip-ray," is exactly what it is, and for many years I nave been riled to distraction every time I havo heard it. Doubtless there could bo some history givon aa to tho moaning of the good old English ohosr, "Hip* hip-hip-hoo-ray" (with the "ray" or "rah" long drawn out); but I challenge anyone to define the origin or meaning of "ip-pip-ray" I If I remember rightly, I wrote to your paper on thia subject shortly before the arrival of King George and Queen Mary, in 1901, and I shall never forget the effect my lusty shouting of the good old English cheer, had on them. I was standing on Oambridge Terrace, not far from Wor*cester street bridge, near the Club; there was no one very near mc; they were looking at the river, and on hearing the old familiar sound, they both looked round at mc and gave mc such a sweet smilo and bow, in return, that I shall never forget; no, not even if I live to be 100. May I conolude by suggestion that drill instructors of Cadets, Territorials, etc., should add to their instructions that of how to cheer properly, in the good old English style. —Yours, etc., LEONARD W. BLAKE.
