FROM THE "PRESS" OF 1864.
SATURDAY, MARCH 12
"Business in Canterbury is still dull, and the tightness in the money market has slightly increased during the past month. Still, thero are no symptoms which can justify any uneasiness."
"About mid-day yesterday, Christchurch was alarmed by a clamorous appeal from the firebell, and I#*» excitement became considerable when a report got about that the Immigration -arracks were in flames. Luckily it turned out to be nothing more than a tire among somo flax near the Windmill road, which was, speedily extinguished. The alarm served only to show how speedily th© Volunteer Fire Brigade can got to the scene of action, however suddenly called on, and also as a gentle hint to the City Council to hasten tho adoption of such measures as may bo of service to the town in case of a real outbreak."
