GARRISON ARTILLERY CORPS.
ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT.
This evening the New Zealand Garrison Artillery Territorials, No. 4 Company, under Captain J. P. E. Veale. will go into camp at Fort Jervois. Ripa Island. Thoy will be tollowed, either on Saturday evening or on Sunday, by tho Coastal Defence Forces, No. 8 Company, among whom are included a number of men from Westport, Major Cotterill being in command.
The strength of the encampment i» expected to reach about 150. 80 being members of the Artillery Territorials, and the others of the Coastal Defenc. Forces.
For the past few days a. fatigue party has been engaged at the fort, and everything will be in readiness for the encampment by to-day. Some of tho troops are to bo accommodated -n. the fort, while others will go 4 under canvas.
In nrevious years tho encampment has included infantry, but on this occasion it will embrace only the two companies mentioned above. As the West Coasters havo not previously had experience with permanent armaments, tho opportunity will be taken of giving them a thorough _istruction in this important branch of military work, and, to tacilitate matters and enable the men to learn as much as possible while in camp, each company will be drilled separately for some daye. It is anticipated that the West Coasters will have sufficient knowledge of the work to enable them to participate in battle practice, to take place on Friday, the 13th inst. In addition to the usual instruction and drilling, the men will also be put through physical drill, semaphore -signalling and skirmishing work, and lectures will be piven in the evenings.
Colonel C. J. Cooper is not expected owing to pressure of business, to be present at the camp to any great extent, but will be represented by Lieut. D. McDonald.' As in previous years, the V.M.C.A will have a large tent erected at the fort enclosure, from which literature will be distributed to the men, and which will also be used for recreative and other purposes. On Sunday, Colonel-Chaplain Chambers will conduct divine service, and lithe afternoon the troops will be at home to relatives and friends, an invitation being also extended to th j Honorary Territorials attached to the company. The following ia the programme for the first day:—Reveille, 6 a.m.; first parade, 6.45 a.m., and physical drill; breakfast. 7.30 a.m.; second parade, 9 a.m., and semaphore signalling; third parade, 10.30 a.m., and .gun drill and gun-_3 - ing; dinner, 12. i0 p.m.; fourth parade, 2 p.m. to 2.45 p.m., and gun drill and gun-laying; fifth parade. 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., and gun drill and gun-laying; tea, 5.30 p.m.; lecture, 8 p.m.; "first post, 9.30 p.m.; last post, 10 p.m., and lights out, 10.15 p.m.
