IRONWORKERS' STRIKE.
(Received March 4th, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 4. The aspect of the iron trades strike is more hopeful. The Employees' Defence Commitf.ee has arranged for a small sub-committee to meet the president of the Employers' Association, and the future action of tbe men will depend on the result of tho meeting.
A fresh dispute in r.espect to the taxMlrivers of Christchurch was lodged with the Clerk of Awards yesterday, the employers being cited by tbe Christchurch Taxi-drivers' Union, branch of the Canterbury Motor-car and Horse Drivers' and Livery Stablo Employees' Union. The demands are the same as those which were before the Council of Conciliation on Tuesday. An industrial agreement has been arrived at in the dispute between the General Labourers' Union and employers carrying on business in South Canterbury as grain, wool, general produce and oil merchants. The rate of wages agreed upon is not less than ls 3d per hour; men handling oil or mh-iflg manure Is 4Jd per hour. The agreement came into force on January 31st. 1914, and is to continue in force tilt Jauuarv 31st, 1016.
