Among the New Year's honours, we notice a knighthood was bestowed on Mr Alexander Kaye Butterworth, general manager of the North Eastern Railwa'v Company, who is a brother of Mr G. "M. Butterworth, of Avonsfl*.

Mr Barrie Maroehel,. who was advance representative for the big pictures "Quo Vadis?" and Rainess "African "Hunt," is again in Christ* church with the 6000 ft dra*na "King of tho Air," which is to be shown at the CokTsseum next week.

.Yesterday, at tbe Rangiora High School, Miss Gladys Griffith, one of the staff, who is leaving for England, was presented by tho students with a peggybag and book, and Mr E. R. Good, on behalf of the Board of Governors, handed her a letter of appreciation of her services.

The Hon. W. A. Holman, Prime Minister of New South Wales, is to arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday, and at 11 a.m. he will bo accorded a civic welcome. Mr Holman will bb tendered a reception by the Social Democratic Party at the V.M.C.A. at 7-o'clock the same evening.

Mr George Harris (president of the New Zealand Swimming Association) and Mrs Harris celebrated their silver wedding yesterday, when a garden party was held at their residence on the West Belt. About three hundred guests were present, and expressed their felicitations to Mr and Mrs Harris. Among the large number of congratulatory messages received was one from the Council of the New Zealand Swimming. Association, the members of which presented Mr Harris with several handsome silver writing-table accessories.

Under date of January 7th, our London correspondent writes: —Mr Archibald F. Nicoll (late of Christchurch and Auckland) has just been elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists. Twelve new members were proposed and voted for on submission of work: only four were elected, and the New Zealand artist was one of these. Mr Nicoll, who has been living in Scotland for the past two years, having a studio in Edinburgh, has recently been spending a little while at Concarneau, South Brittany, sketching tarbour and fishing boats principally. During the autumn the Now Ze-alandcr has exhibited at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, at the Manchester City Art GalloTy, and at _c Royal Scottish WaterrColour Society, where one picture painted at Concarneau was hung on- tho line. At the present moment a fair-sired oil landscape—"Afternoon, Brittany"— bangs' on the line at the exhibition of the Society of Scottish Artists.
