THE PUMPING STATION

TO TH» EDITOR OF "XHB TKZSM." Sir,—ln the last report of the City Council, 1 notice Mr J. <i. Scott complaining about the number of men working iv the pumping station being too many and the upkeep too large. Now, I would like to know if it is possible to work the place with less hande. There are four engineers and four firemen there. Now, unless Mr Scott wants the men to work seyen days * week, I don't see how ho is going to shorten hands. Jde might save expense if he put all firemen on at ft less wage than the engineers, but the* all repairs would have to be put on* into some town siiop, and more than likely they would cost double what they" do now, and then the valuable machinery down there must bo properly looked atter and not allowed to Z° *° the dogs. N«JW, if he wants to save expense, let him see that all the other Council employees do a fair day 6 work for the wages they are getting. Iwe many of We men are a* willing to stop and liare a yarn with anybody as they are to do the work allotted to them. Men may be seen often talKine to ono another, or smoking, instead of doing their duty. Let him see » this also, that the city engineer is the most capable man to be had, instead of trying to shorten hands where they are needed.-You„, ~ February sth, 1914.
