DEATH OF A FAMOUS ARTIST

MR P. VAN DER VELDEN.. (press ASSOCIATION' telegram.) AUCKLAND, November 12. Mr Van der Velden, the 'famous Dutch artist, was taken ill suddenly last night, and died in the hospital from heart disease.

The late Mr Van der Velden was a great artist. He was a painter of European fame, and some of his work is to be found in the best company in Continental public galleries. He was ranked, by sume next to the famous Israels among Dutch painters of his time. Mr Van der Velden was born in Rotterdam in 1836, and came to New Zealand in 1890. He lived in Christchurch for a number of years. In 1898 he went to Australia and returned in 1906, since when he had lived in Wellington. A number of his pictures are in Christchurch, two being in the Art Gallery.
