The* Fodor&I-Shire Line steamer Surrey, from West of England ports, arrived at Wellington on Monday, and is due at Lyttelton on Thursday. Tho Taviuni is due here on Saturday from Southern Ports, and will sail tho samo day j for Wellington, New Plymouth, Westport and Greymouth. A good deal of interest was taken at Wellington on Monday in the borthing of the Mapourika at the Railway Wharf. Captain Hounes, who was in command, had to back his' vessel between tho Wool and Railway Wharves, fo as to berth her at the latter. In tho stiff southerly, which considerably hampered the vessel's movements, and with a busy fleet of ferry boats continually getting into, the congested area available for manoeuvring, Captain Holmes's task was by no moans an enviable one. A slight error of judgment would have meant either a collision with" one of tho ferry boats, or considerab'e damage to tho Wool Wharf or the Kaitangata, which was lying at tho Railway Wharf. After nearly an hour's manccuvring, the Maoourika was pa'ely "tied up." It was. a ticklish job exceedingly well done. Tbe'Raiinra is loading timber at Greymouth for Lyttelton. Mr A. Brooks has joned the Haupiri as chief officer. Mr W. R. Keiley, third engineer of tho Karamu. has signed off the vessel's articles. Mr A. Wishart lias joined the vessel as chief engineer. Mr J. A. R. Something about tho extent of her enormous pumpir.tr capacity was demonstrated when one of her pumps Tecently sucked all the water out of the stranded steamer Kowhai in an incredibly «hort space of time. A powerful yearchlight, to be utilised for deßcryins- distant object!* at nifrht time, will be a feature of the modern equipment of the . tea m*r which is lik-ly to "be out of the builder.' hand, by tho end of this year. Mast <_f the hull pistes are now in and thp .ir. modc'lii .■ of the hull is now 1 apparent.
